Blogs have RSS feeds, as do podcasts, and you can even subscribe to YouTube channels or Twitter feeds or your favorite newsletter as an RSS feed.

  • Use RSS! RSS is a technology so old it can legally drink that allows you to "subscribe" to websites that interest you so that new posts or stories are added to your RSS feed.
  • There are alternatives, but seriously, just use Backblaze.
  • Use offsite backup! You will sleep better at night knowing that your data is safe even if you lose your computer.
  • Find an app you like, or just use Textexpander like most people and take a look at Lifehacker's comprehensive guide.

But, I do have accounts with hundreds of websites and online services. Use a password manager! (video & instructions via The Verge ) I don't know any of my passwords.Of course, I am also happy to work with you (email me!) if you'd like some one-on-one assistance.

I have linked to articles and resources that will help you, with step-by-step instructions. There is an upfront investment (most of these tools are not completely free), but each one is an incredible value. They will help anyone who takes the time to set them up, and they will save you lots of time in the long-run. I made this list because these apps are invariably the ones that I wish everyone was using, but aren't. But, I am moving away from the "Part x" naming convention since, well, I think there's going to be a lot of parts! The Most Important Apps that Don't Come on Your Computer

Technically, this would be the third piece in a series of articles I am writing about how to become a more productive user of technology (you can find parts 1 and 2 here and here, if you are so inclined).
